FIFTH WALL SOUND WORKSHOPS – 8 lydkunst-workshops på LAK 2013

If the well-known "fourth wall" refers to the boundary between the artist and their audience, often "broken" through techniques of meta-narrative in theater and film, the term "fifth wall" could describe the boundaries between the audience members themselves during a shared artistic experience. The Fifth Wall Workshops series for the LAK Festival 2013 concerns itself with how this boundary can be broken within the traditional festival format of performance, installation and lecture, and in a world where almost everyone has become a digital art producer. These workshops emphasize participatory situations which transform festival visitors from passive receivers to active creators of sound art. Eventually, both "artist" and "wall" dissolve away, leaving the responsibility of presenting the workshop results with the participants themselves.

Before and during the LAK Festival, a number of workshops will take place, each geared towards a different level of participation. The most involved participants will join John Grzinich and Mads Bech Paluszewski-Hau in a series of sound explorations and interventions of the urban area around the festival venue. Those wishing to build different types of electronic sound instruments will join workshops led by Tore Honoré Boe, Derek Holzer, Lise-Lotte Norelius and Ann Rosén - each with their own personal style. Those wishing a more informal first exposure to electronic sound are encouraged to drop into the CEO Bendorama pavilion. And when people have constructed their various instruments, Christian Skjødt can lead them on a journey through the techniques of improvisation. Finally, a special workshop for young people hosted by Kristina Andersen of STEIM introduces simple technologies for playing electronic music.

The workshops of John Grzinich and Mads Bech Paluszewski-Hau will largely take place before the festival, so that the participants can lead the festival public through the sonic situations they have created. The rest of the workshops will take place "on display" in public during the festival program itself, wrapping up with a concert by the participants on the last night of the festival.
